November 2018 (Windows Version Market Share)

Windows 10 remains at #1 position with 52.7% of Desktop Windows versions market. Windows 7 declined nearly 13.3% since the launch of Windows 10. Windows 8.1 remains 6.85% followed by legacy Windows XP at 2.22% Worldwide share. Windows 8 and Windows Vista two of the most criticized and hated Microsoft’s OS have 2.03% and 0.59% market share.

It’s worth noting that Windows 10 is gaining huge market share by each passing day whereas Windows 7 is declining at the same rate. However, Windows XP, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 still remain to have a combined market share of nearly 9 percentage. If the above trends continue then Microsoft Windows 10 will reach about 75-85% Windows Versions Market Share (Desktop) till 2020. Which is the best operating system? Is it Windows or Android or IOS? Do you like mobiles more than desktops or laptops, this is few of the biggest questions that arise in the operating system market.

However, the Survey Results will Shock You!

According to StatCounter (Operating System Market Share Worldwide)

The Following data contains OS market share irrespective of our devices. Desktops, mobiles, tablets & consoles all are considered in this stats.

Source: StatCounter Global Stats – OS Market Share

  1. Windows 36.67%
  2. Android 32.74%
  3. iOS 13.6%
  4. OS X (Mac) 6.37%
  5. Linux 0.8%
  6. Others 8.2%

Till September 2018, Android was on #1 position with 40.85% share. Windows was on 36.23%. In the last 2 months, drastic changes happened, Android declined its top position -7.98%. Over the same period, Others increased from 1.31% to 8.05%. Now, what does it means that leaving hardware aside for a moment, as far as the overall OS is concerned Android is on a Big Decline!

But, this is not the case with Mobile OS. From SEP – NOV 2018 in two months, iOS went from 20.66% to 24.44%. Whereas, Android from 76.61% to 72.35%. But, Android holds a strong position in the Mobile OS market & they will continue to dominate the Mobile OS market unless and until someone comes with a radical new approach for mobile OS. Probably, Microsoft Windows Andromeda.

Windows 10 Andromeda OS and Windows Core OS (The Future of Windows)

The Future of Windows

Windows Andromeda is a variant of Windows 10 and a vital part of Windows Core OS. The Long rumored (From last 4 Years old) Surface Phone runs on this OS as per many sources. In fact, Microsoft itself is testing it on their own ARM based foldable hardware device (AKA Surface Phone). Windows Core OS is an effort to bring back Windows to Mobile category. Moreover, Andromeda OS will have CShell (New Responsive UI) that will allow applications or software to get adapted to the hardware. This might be very early to say, but “Windows Core OS might be the Future of Microsoft Legacy Windows”.

Microsoft Surface Brand

Microsoft Surface

Microsoft Surface Line was a major flop when it was launched with the introduction of Surface Pro 1 & 2. However, things changed over a period of time. Surface devices are now “The Most Branded Hardware Devices” And, now in some regions, they are outselling the Apple iPad.

Panos Pranay (Microsoft Chief Product Officer & Surface Head)

“It’s not just a core part of our strategy and at the center of Microsoft, it’s also a core part of how we build products at Microsoft,” he says. “It’s important that that resonates. It’s important for me to say it.”

“Yes, one hundred percent. Without hesitation. I think if you asked me five years ago, we were still learning. We were still trying to figure out what hardware should do to bring software to life. But now it’s not just a core part of the strategy.”

Panos Pranay on Microsoft Lumia & Satya Nadella

“I think we learned quite a bit,” says Panay. “Lumia, of course, was a challenge. We can take those product lessons and customer lessons and move them forward. I think we have. Satya [Nadella, Microsoft CEO] talks about the growth mindset, about how we can learn as fast as we can through our successes and, mainly, our failures. When you fail, you are in a true learning mode. You are in a tremendous growth phase. And this is something we take to heart.”

Conclusion

The Legacy Windows surely is doing Great! According to me, Windows 10 will reach 75-85% of Desktop Windows Versions Market Share till DEC 2020. When it comes to overall market very tough competition going on between Windows & Android, But I think the main key players will be the “Others” OS because in last 2 months they have seen an exceptional growth but very early to say that. Windows in Desktop will remain in solid condition. Hopefully, Microsoft Windows OS share will remain 80% + till DEC 2020. Although, OS X has now reached till 12-13% share.

Microsoft Windows 10 Andromeda and Windows 10 Core OS will be the major deciding factor as far as the future of Windows is concerned. And, Yes! I Think we might be able to see our much rumored & liked  “Microsoft Surface Phone”. It would be a very nostalgic moment when Microsoft will again step in the mobile market.
